Prognostic factors in short-term disability due to musculoskeletal disorders

To identify factors associated with poor outcome in temporary work disability (TWD) due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).We conducted a secondary data analysis of a 2-year randomized controlled trial in which all patients with TWD due to MSDs in 3 health districts of Madrid (Spain) were included. Analyses refer to the patients in the intervention group.

Authors: Peul WC, Brand R, Thomeer RT, Koes BW A randomized trial showed that surgery speeds up recovery of patients suffering sciatica for 6 weeks but prolonged conservative care yields similar results at one year. However 39% of this conservative care group ultimately underwent surgery after a mean period of 18.7 weeks.

Is the interleukin-6 haplotype a prognostic factor for sciatica?

CONCLUSIONS: This is the first observation of any prognostic genotype among sciatica patients. The IL6 haplotype GGGA predicted the number of days with back or leg pain and also sickness absence.
